What is polyphony?
Polyphony – is the maximum number of notes a piano can produce at the same time.
If it says "64 polyphony" on a digital piano, it means that the piano can play 64 different notes simultaneously. These sounds include not only the notes pressed with your fingers—but also the sustained sounds from the pedal, overlapping notes, and even the combination of two sounds at the same time using the layer function on some pianos. Why is the polyphony count important?
The higher the polyphony count, the more possible it is for the piano to play sounds more clearly, fully, and without cutting off.
On pianos with low polyphony, when several notes and the pedal overlap, the previous sounds are cut off prematurely, which causes the music to sound robotic.
If you just want to practice playing with a few fingers, 64 polyphony may be enough.
But if you are playing with two hands, using the pedal, or performing classical pieces or film scores, you should choose a digital piano with a minimum 128 or 192 polyphony count. The polyphony count is listed, but the sound cuts off? Why?
Although some cheap Chinese brands list a polyphony count of 128 or 256, it is not possible in reality. This is because the sound processors of these pianos are weak, the assembly is unprofessional, and when notes overlap, the sounds start to cut off.
