Choosing a piano for a child - a parent's guide

What are the differences between weighted, hammer action, and graded piano keyboards?

Digital piano terminology can be very confusing: weighted, semi-weighted, hammer action, graded hammer action, ivory feel... What is the difference between them? Which one is better? In this article, we explain every keyboard type in simple terms.

Why is keyboard feel so important?

What separates a digital piano from an acoustic piano is not just the method of sound production, but the keyboard mechanism, which determines the feel under your fingers. This sensation directly shapes your finger technique, your dynamic performance (the transitions between pianissimo and fortissimo), and your future adaptation to a real acoustic piano.

A performer who practices with the wrong keyboard for 1-2 years will have to relearn their technique when switching to a real piano. This is a huge waste of time. Therefore, choosing the right keyboard type from day one is essential.

The 5 main keyboard types

Weakest

1. Spring-loaded keyboard (Unweighted)

The keys return via a spring mechanism. All keys have the same resistance. It has nothing to do with a piano. It is only used in instruments like synthesizers and MIDI keyboards. It is absolutely not suitable for serious piano study.

Medium

2. Semi-weighted keyboard

A small amount of weight has been added to the spring mechanism. The feel is slightly heavier than a spring-loaded keyboard, but it is still far from the feel of an acoustic piano. It can be considered a minimal option for beginners, but it is not recommended for serious study.

Good

3. Weighted keyboard (Fully weighted)

There is physical weight under each key. The touch sensation is close to an acoustic piano. All keys have the same weight (it is not graded). This is the minimum standard for beginners; if you are not using at least this, you haven't bought a piano.

Best

4. Hammer Action keyboard

There is a small hammer mechanism inside. The sensation of the hammer pivoting at the moment of the strike is transmitted to your fingers, just like on a real acoustic piano. This is the most realistic feel possible in digital pianos. It is the standard for the mid-to-high price segment.

Peak

5. Graded Hammer Action keyboard

This is an advanced version of the hammer action keyboard. The lower notes (bass) are played heavier, and the higher notes (treble) are played lighter, just like an acoustic grand piano. This is the highest level of acoustic piano simulation possible on a digital keyboard.

Premium

6. Wooden Key Action keyboard

The keys themselves are made of wood. The feel of the touch, the resonance, and the material under your fingers are almost identical to an acoustic piano. The Kawai CA series and Roland LX series feature this technology. This is the premium price segment.

Comparison table

Keyboard type Feel Suitable for Price segment
Spring-loaded (unweighted) Very light Synthesizer, MIDI Cheap
Semi-weighted Light Hobby, synthesizer Mid-low
Weighted Medium Beginner piano Entry
Hammer action Real Serious study Medium
Graded hammer action Very real Mid-to-high level Mid-high
Wooden key action Most real Professional High

Keyboard technologies by brand

Kawai keyboard technologies

Kawai is the leader in keyboard technology. Its most significant innovation is the Millennium III Action mechanism made of composite plastic material. This material, used instead of wooden parts, is resistant to humidity and temperature changes. Kawai's technology lineup:

  • Responsive Hammer Compact (RHC): ES series portable models
  • Responsive Hammer III (RHIII): CA series entry-level
  • Grand Feel Compact (GFC): CA series higher-end
  • Grand Feel Pedal System + Wooden Keys: CA 901 top-tier

Roland keyboard technologies

Roland PHA (Progressive Hammer Action) system development lineup:

  • PHA-4 Standard: FP series entry-level models
  • PHA-4 Premium: The peak of the FP-90X portable model
  • PHA-50 (Wooden/Ivory feel): HP series home pianos

Finger feel: What is Ivory Feel?

In the past, the surface covering of acoustic piano keys was made of ivory. The feature of ivory is that it absorbs moisture slowly, which prevents sweaty fingers from slipping. In modern technology, to provide this feeling, brand companies add a special textured, porous synthetic material covering to the keys.

  • Kawai: Ivory Touch key surface
  • Roland: Ivory Feel texturing

This feature reduces finger fatigue during long practice sessions, especially for those with visible perspiration. For serious performers, this is an added benefit.

Which keyboard should you choose? A simple decision guide

  • Buying my first piano, a total beginner: At least weighted, ideally hammer action
  • Buying for my child (7+ years): Weighted, if possible hammer action
  • I'm in music school, studying seriously: Graded hammer action is a must
  • I'm a professional performer, want a home piano: A model with wooden key action (Kawai CA / Roland HP LX)
  • Stage, portable, studio: Hammer action is sufficient (Roland FP-90X, Kawai ES920)
💡 Practical test: When you come to the store, press a few keys. Press the middle C key both very softly (pianissimo) and very quickly (fortissimo). The feel should be different; this is velocity sensitivity. Then, press a low note on the left (heaviest) and a high note (lightest). The difference in resistance should be noticeable; this shows it is graded.

Conclusion

Don't let the technical terms confuse your piano keyboard choice. Simple summary: spring-loaded keyboards are not pianos; weighted keyboards are the minimum for beginners; hammer action is the standard for serious learning; and graded hammer action is the closest digital alternative to the real acoustic piano feel. Choose the model with the best keyboard your budget allows—the return on this investment is directly proportional to the quality of the keyboard.
