Responsive Hammer III keyboard mechanism
The Kawai CN301 ’s renowned Responsive Hammer III keyboard action is designed to replicate the tactile feel of Kawai grand pianos. Each key is realistically weighted with metal hammers and “graded” to be slightly heavier in the bass and lighter in the high notes, just like an acoustic piano. These weights allow the keys to return to their original position without relying on springs, resulting in a smooth, natural playing experience.
Complementing the true touch weight, the RHIII keyboard mechanism is also equipped with Kawai 's latest triple sensor key detection system , which enhances playing realism. The additional third sensor significantly increases sensitivity when hitting the same keys consecutively, allowing rapid trills and other techniques to sound smoother and more acoustic piano-like .

Known as Japan's "most prestigious pianos," Shigeru Kawai instruments grace the stages of concert halls and music institutes around the world, and are renowned for their superb tonal accuracy and wide dynamic range. The CN301 model delivers the captivating tone of two of Shigeru Kawai 's most iconic instruments – the SK-EX Concert and mid-sized SK-5 Studio grand pianos – and allows musicians to experience the distinct characteristics of each instrument.
The rich, expressive sound of the SK-EX and EX concert grand pianos lies at the heart of the CN301 . All eighty-eight keys of these world-class instruments have been carefully recorded, meticulously analyzed, and accurately recreated as high-quality digital waveforms.
Recording each key individually – as opposed to extending the same tone across different notes – preserves the unique harmonic character of the grand piano and ensures that the sound heard when any key is played on the CN301 is a faithful representation of the original acoustic source.
The Responsive Hammer III keyboard mechanism not only features the same sized hammers, but also includes counterweights placed on each black and white key. Similar to an acoustic piano, these additional weights help balance the touch of the keyboard during pianissimo (very soft) passages, while also providing a greater sense of substance and solidity when playing forcefully.
High Performance 4-Speaker Output System
The CN301 's high-performance 4-speaker output system , unique in its price range, is designed to replicate the harmonic spectrum of an acoustic piano. Low frequencies are transmitted from the bottom of the instrument, while mid and high frequencies are radiated outward through speakers located above, resulting in a wide tone that closely mirrors the sound reproduction of a grand piano.
Additional Voices and Performance Modes
Complementing the beautiful acoustic piano sounds, the CN301 offers a wide selection of additional sounds, including electric pianos, drawbar or church organs, string music, human choirs, and synthesizer pads. This allows musicians to further diversify their performances.
Dual performance mode allows two different sounds to overlap, such as grand piano and string music, while Split and Four Hands modes divide the keys into two independent sections.
This feature is particularly useful in learning environments, as it allows a teacher and student (or between students) to play together using one instrument at the same time.
