Kawai CN301 RD
Kawai CN301
High specifications, four-speaker sound system, USB audio capabilities
The Kawai CN301, the most powerful model in the CN series, combines the Responsive Hammer III keyboard mechanism, triple sampling of SK-EX, SK-5, and EX concert grands, a 360° radiating four-speaker system, USB audio recording/playback, Bluetooth® MIDI/Audio connectivity, a rich palette of 45 sounds, and extensive lesson features. From Royal Musical Instruments, the Kawai CN301 offers professional quality at an affordable price.
Keyboard and Touch
The CN301's Responsive Hammer III (RHIII) keyboard mechanism is based on the same excellent technology as the CN201: graded weighted metal hammers, springless construction, reinforced chassis, felt-covered rubber cushions. Ivory Touch key surfaces, 88-key counterweights, a triple sensor system, and let-off simulation — all together provide the most realistic keyboard feel in this price class.
Thanks to its reinforced material chassis, the RHIII mechanism maintains its stability even during powerful playing. Kawai's keyboard system stands out from its competitors with its quiet operation — you won't disturb family members during late-night practice sessions.
Sound Quality
Unlike the CN201, the CN301 reproduces three world-class concert grands: Shigeru Kawai's largest SK-EX concert grand, the mid-sized SK-5 studio grand, and the internationally acclaimed Kawai EX. All three instruments are recorded with full 88-key stereo sampling — preserving the unique tonal character of each note perfectly.
Kawai's Progressive Harmonic Imaging technology records each note separately across a wide dynamic range, ensuring seamless tonal transitions from pianissimo to fortissimo. The CN301's 256-note polyphony capability prevents any notes from being lost even in the most complex harmonic passages.
One of the main features distinguishing the CN301 from the CN201 is its four-speaker sound system. Large speakers at the bottom handle low frequencies, while the upper 360° radiating speakers spread mid and high frequencies in all directions. The result is a natural sound projection that resembles the sound field around a grand piano.
Functions and Connectivity
One of the CN301's strongest advantages is its USB audio recording/playback capability. You can record your performance in MP3 or WAV format to a USB flash drive and then listen to it. The overdub function allows you to add new layers over your own performance. Additionally, you can play MIDI files (SMF) downloaded from the internet directly from the piano.
Bluetooth® MIDI (v5.0) and Audio (v5.1) connectivity, PianoRemote, and PiaBookPlayer applications are the same as in the CN201. However, the CN301's Virtual Technician function has 21 parameters — offering broader customization possibilities than the CN201's 18, including individual Voicing, Tuning, and Key Volume adjustments for all 88 keys. Also, Line In/Out (6.3 mm) outputs are available.
The lesson function in the CN301 is particularly rich: Burgmüller, Czerny 30 and 100, Beyer, Bach Inventions, Sonatinen Album, Chopin waltzes, Alfred Basic, Adult, and Premier courses — in total, the most extensive lesson library. 100 rhythm patterns, 10 song recorders (2 parts), and ~90,000 note memory are also exclusive to the CN301.
Design
The modern cabinet of the CN301, with its curved legs, minimalist support blocks, and extruded side panels, gives the instrument a particularly premium look. The left panel with an OLED screen provides direct access to all functions. The large music rest, adjustable to 3 angles, easily accommodates large sheet music scores. Although slightly larger (141 × 43.5 cm), the CN301, with its sturdy construction, is also suitable for professional environments. Premium Rosewood, Premium Satin Black, and Premium Satin White color options are available.
