The Kawai SK-2 combines the elegant dimensions of a 180 cm classic salon grand with the selected materials, craftsmanship, and individual voicing philosophy of Shigeru Kawai. Despite being a compact premium model, it offers a rich tonal palette, long sustain, and precise articulation.
The Shigeru Kawai philosophy
The Shigeru Kawai series is the highest expression of Kawai's premium grand piano production. The series continues the ideal of the company's second president, Shigeru Kawai, to "create the best pianos in the world." The selection of materials, natural seasoning of the wood, regulation of the action, and final voicing stages are carried out under the supervision of highly skilled masters. The final voicing process for each instrument is completed by a Kawai Master Piano Artisan (MPA).
Millennium III action and responsive touch
The Millennium III grand piano action utilizes ABS-Carbon components reinforced with carbon fiber. Lightweight, rigid, and dimensionally stable, these parts facilitate the rapid transfer of key energy to the hammer, responsive performance in repeated notes, and delicate control from pianissimo to fortissimo. Extended spruce key sticks create a more even response across the front and back of the keyboard. NEOTEX surfaces offer a touch that is close to natural, providing controlled playability.
“Shiko Seion” hammers and individual voicing
“Shiko Seion”—meaning “extremely precise voicing”—is a specialized hammer system that is a core feature of Shigeru Kawai grand pianos. The hammers are hand-pressed without the application of heat and voiced without artificial hardeners. Hand-wound bass strings and precisely machined Shigeru Kawai Concert Agraffes create clear articulation, powerful fundamental tones, and a rich harmonic structure in every register.
Premium spruce soundboard and Konsei Katagi rim
The tapered solid spruce soundboard undergoes a long-term natural kigarashi seasoning process. The Konsei Katagi hybrid inner rim combines layers of selected hardwoods of varying densities: woods that provide brighter projection are balanced with those that create a warm and full resonance. Full spruce back posts, SOLID construction, a V-Pro cast iron plate, and the CORE system support efficient transfer of string energy to the soundboard, sustained resonance, and structural stability.
Pedals and expressive capabilities
The Dual-Pivot damper construction makes half-pedal control smoother. Together with the damper, sostenuto, and soft pedals, this system provides professional-level expressive freedom for legato, tonal transitions, and delicate control of resonance.
