The Kawai SK-7 229 cm semi-concert grand piano combines passionate tonal power, precise articulation, and poetic color possibilities. Its large resonance reserve provides broad projection on stage, while the sensitive action preserves the pianist's most subtle nuances of touch.
The Shigeru Kawai philosophy
The Shigeru Kawai series is the highest expression of Kawai's premium grand piano production. The series continues the ideal of the company's second president, Shigeru Kawai, to "create the world's best pianos." Material selection, natural wood seasoning, action regulation, and final voicing stages are carried out under the supervision of highly qualified master craftsmen. The final voicing process for each instrument is completed by a Kawai Master Piano Artisan (MPA).
Millennium III action and controlled touch
The Millennium III grand piano action uses ABS-Carbon components reinforced with carbon fiber. These lightweight, rigid, and dimensionally stable parts serve the rapid transfer of key energy to the hammer, flexible response in repeated notes, and delicate control from pianissimo to fortissimo. Extended spruce key sticks create a more even response at the front and back of the keyboard. NEOTEX surfaces offer a controlled touch close to natural texture.
“Shiko Seion” hammers and individual voicing
“Shiko Seion” — a special hammer system meaning “ultimate voicing” — is one of the key features of Shigeru Kawai grand pianos. The hammers are hand-pressed without heat application and voiced without artificial hardening agents. Hand-wound bass strings and precision-machined Shigeru Kawai Concert Agraffes create clear articulation in every register, a powerful fundamental tone, and a rich harmonic structure.
Premium spruce soundboard and Konsei Katagi rim
The solid spruce soundboard, processed with a tapered profile, undergoes a long-term natural kigarashi seasoning process. The Konsei Katagi hybrid inner rim combines layers of selected hardwoods with different densities: woods that provide brighter projection are balanced with woods that create a warm and full resonance. Full spruce beams, SOLID construction, a V‑Pro iron plate, and the CORE system support efficient transfer of string energy to the soundboard, sustained resonance, and structural stability.
Pedal and expression capabilities
The Dual-Pivot damper construction makes half-pedal control smoother. Combined with the damper, sostenuto, and soft pedals, this system provides professional-level freedom of expression for legato, color shifts, and delicate control of resonance.
In the SK-7, hard boxwood bridge caps facilitate the precise transfer of high frequencies to the soundboard and clear treble projection balanced with a powerful bass register.
