Steinway & Sons Model B is a Classic Grand piano with a length of 211 cm. Due to the balance it strikes between size, tonal power, and control, the model is suitable for professional studios, conservatories, chamber halls, recording venues, and spacious interiors. Providing fullness in the bass register, clear harmony in the middle register, and a bright yet controlled tone in the treble, its structure allows for flexible performance in solo, chamber, and accompaniment repertoire.

Soundboard and tonal projection

Model B utilizes a Diaphragmatic Soundboard made from select, quarter-sawn Sitka spruce. The thickness of the soundboard tapers gradually from approximately 9 mm in the center to 6 mm at the edges. The double-crowned profile and the four solid spruce supports manually fitted to the board facilitate free energy dispersion, long sustain, and a uniform sound character across registers.

Rim, strings, and plate

The continuous bent rim is crafted from 16 layers of hard rock maple and is approximately 2¾ inches thick. The sturdy rim preserves resonance energy and supports the instrument's dynamic range. The overstrung scale, combined agraffe system, and front and rear duplex scales create a more complex overtone structure. Treble strings are made of high-tensile Swedish steel, while bass strings are wound with pure copper; the longest string is 151 cm. The bell-quality cast iron plate is produced in Steinway's own foundry.

Keyboard and playing feel

Keys made of European spruce are individually weighted and balanced; the longest key is 53.3 cm. Premium wool-felt hammers and precision-engineered action translate differences in touch speed and depth into nuanced tonal shadings. This construction creates precise control for soft legato lines, rapid repetitions, and powerful chord textures alike. Vertically laminated hard maple bridges, solid maple caps, and the seven-laminate Hexagrip pinblock complete the stability of tone and tuning.
